4R CHAMPIONS

4R Champions are expected to be an advocate for the 4R Solution project and incorporate the 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework into agriculture in their respective regions. Champions will play a key role in sharing information, intelligence and helping to identify issues and resolve those top down, bottom up and across. 4R Champions can be anyone from local government, ministries, farm groups and key rural development actors. They might be academics, policy makers, scientists or agribusiness owners.

The Program

The 4R Champion program is part of the Global Affairs Canada funded 4R Solution project that is being implemented in three sub-Saharan countries – Ethiopia, Ghana and Senegal. The project will improve the overall well-being of 80,000 smallholder farmers, 50 per cent of whom are women. The initiative aims to improve agricultural productivity and farm income, by incorporating 4R Nutrient Stewardship (Right Source @ Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place ®) into fertilizer use management as well as important gender and environmental resilience strategies.

What is the 4R Champion program?

Who is eligible for becoming a 4R Champion?

The 4R Champions application is open to anyone from sub-Saharan Africa to complete a 4R micro project. The applicants can be anyone from a high school student/teacher to someone working in the private sector, government etc.

How many 4R Champions are you recruiting?

In 2020-2021, we are aiming to recruit at least 10 4R Champions. However, the number may vary depending on the quality of the proposals we receive.

What are the mandatory application requirements?

  • Reside in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Must have completed Fertilizer Canada’s 4R Essentials online course
  • The course completion certificate must be uploaded with the application
  • must be a 4R micro project
  • project must be done in sub- Saharan Africa
  • must have a clear timeline of the project
  • your 4R micro project must be either original or an incremental extension of an ongoing/existing project
  • You must submit your application form and all project deliverables in either English or French

How do I apply for 4R Championship?

  • Fill up the application
  • Upload completion certificate of the 4R Essentials online course
  • Upload one recommendation letter from your employer, professor, not for profit organization, etc.
  • Upload a recent headshot
  • Upload your proposal and a short bio
  • Submit your application online. If you would like to mail a paper application instead, please contact us at lnirjan@fertilizercanada.ca and we will provide you the mailing address closest to you.

What happens after I apply?

The selection committee will review all applications and shortlisted candidates. The shortlisted candidates may be contacted to schedule a phone/Skype/WhatsApp interview.

Once we have made a final decision, we will notify the selected candidates via email.

An Agreement between Fertilizer Canada and the selected Applicant will be signed on the agreed upon grant which will be forwarded upon completion of your proposed project and submission of all required deliverables on time.

What is the grant amount and how will I be disbursed?

Applicants can request either a $500 or a $1000 grant depending on the scope of the project submitted in the application.

The grant will be disbursed once the project is complete and the Selection Committee has received all the deliverables as per the completion timeline.

What are the deliverables of my project/research?

  • A short video of no more than 2 minutes; showcasing your 4R micro project and its impact
  • A written report of 500 words on your 4R micro project. Please include any relevant photos with your report
  • An Endorsement letter from your employer, professor, not for profit organizations etc., if you have applied for $1000 grant

Please note that your submitted reports, photographs and videos will be uploaded to the 4R Solution website.

What are the categories I can do my 4R micro project?

Your 4R micro project must be in any one of the following three (3) broad categories:

  • Agriculture extension
  • Demonstration
  • Communication

What will you look for in my 4R micro project proposal?

Your project proposal must be a 4R micro project. In addition, we will also look for a gender component, involvement of farmer co-operatives, overall value chains, and number of stakeholders/beneficiaries reached. Your proposal must meet at least one of the above criteria to be considered.
